Unlike the more well known horse sport of
Polo which is associated with British Royalty, annual social events with champagne and polo ponies.
Polocrosse is the Outback Australian originated bastard child that is tougher, faster, more entertaining and completely unpretentious.
What makes Polocrosse a more interesting sport to watch is that the ball is carried by players in a
Lacrosse like stick which allows play to occur laterally around the field as the ball is contested. This is distinct from Polo where the ball is hit along the ground with a mallet which causes the game to be played mostly straight up and down the field.
This weekend on the 4th and 5th of April, teams from Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria and Western Australia will play in the
interstate competition at Morgan Park in Warwick.
I can not urge more strongly that Brisbane people take the trip down even for one day to see this sport played at a competitive level. It won’t have the same
massive crowds that the 2007 World Cup attracted at the same venue. Though you will see a spectacular sport, mix with salt of the earth country people and have a truly excellent day.
